I hope this New Year’s Eve finds you safe and sound and snuggled up at home, waiting for this year to end. I have a bottle of Veuve Cliquot chilling in the fridge. If you’ve never had it, you should try it. It’s pricey (about $70), but as we only have it every now and then, I think the splurge is worth it! We visited the Veuve Cliquot Caves a few years back in Reims, France, and it was fascinating. But, that’s not what I planned to write about.
One of my favorite things is my planner/journal. Tomorrow I will be starting my 6th year. I even teach classes on it. It’s one of my most popular classes and has helped many people become more organized. TBF, I’m still struggling with organization in my home, but on paper, I am SUPER organized. Many people use their journals to set goals, which is a good thing. Writing down your goal makes it more real, IMO. The downside of setting goals is that people often feel guilty when they don’t achieve that goal. This isn’t due to any fault of their own, but because a goal without a plan is just a wish. A lot of people set a goal to lose weight, but looking at that big goal can be intimidating and discouraging. Goals need to be broken down into manageable steps. You know the old adage: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
You come up with a goal, and you write it down. Great! Now what? How are you going to reach that goal? Think of what you need to do to achieve that goal. What steps do you need to take? Write them down! Break those steps down into actionable events. I personally LOVE to check things off. I get a weird high off that little check mark!
Let’s look at the example of losing weight. Say your goal is to lose 25 pounds. If you keep looking at that goal, it’s going to seem like a weight around your neck (for you literary types, think of it as your albatross). Break it into smaller goals. If you give yourself 6 months, that’s 4.15 pounds a month. If you give yourself an entire year, that’s just over 2 pounds a month. That seems MUCH more doable, doesn’t it? Absolutely! At the beginning of every month, you can have a mini goal to lose 2 pounds. You can TOTALLY do that. What are you going to do to lose those 2 (or 4) pounds a month? Cut out soda? Workout a few times a week? Skip dessert? Give up your afternoon snack? Break it down! Write down what you need to do next. Do you need to research healthy lunches or snacks? Make a note to do so. Want to find new workout routines? Make it part of your plan, and takes notes of what you find. If I don’t write something down, it doesn’t get done.

If you don’t see your planner size listed, here’s a little formula I found to help you figure out what percentage to print it (yes, sorry, math).
WIDTH of your insert ÷ 8.5 = ?
Number from above x 100 = Percent to print
Example: Let’s say my planner insert is 4.5” wide x 6” high.
4.5 ÷ 8.5 = .53
.53 x 100 = 53%
You need to print at 53%. Easy easy, right?
